Here here Jim, I feel the same way when reading a book. Keep it simple and let's get to know the characters without there being a crowd of them. I read Hemingway's book and it was not my favourite, although I do love his style, a poignant write, love Dolly x

Thanks, Dolly. This is one of the big reasons I like e-books--the search function to help me remember who all those dang characters are!

I must admit when I read someone's work the less the characters in the story, the more I follow, some will write two separate scenes consecutively, and I struggle to follow the story, perhaps my perspective is too narrow, beautifully written Jim, very skilful writing indeed, blessings Roy

This poem, Too Many Characters, presented with four AABB-rhymed quatrains, reminds me of what my son said to me when I first read him The Old Lady Who Lived in a Shoe: "Who are all the children? What's their names?" That was fun for me, filling in dozens of additional characters, but I feel he was left re-thinking his question selection.

Great poem! The voice of the poem rings true. I like the use of colloquial language which brings it alive. The meter reflects the rhythm of everyday speech. I agree, I have to go back in some novels to check who is who!

The image definitely matches the tone of the poem! Reminds me of the old man yells at cloud Simpsons meme. The full rhyme scheme (AABB...etc.) fits perfectly too.

I like your "linguistic freedom" and use of words as pronounced within the written word. You really use it to build a solid character in the speaker. I also like your rhyme scheme. Good work

Thank you, Kayte. This one kind of goes along with my previous essay on why I prefer e-books to physical books (I can search for names easily when I forget them!)

Actually, LOTR is my favorite work of fiction of all time, but I first read it back in high school and have read it many times since. I know it so well, that it doesn't tax my memory now that I'm older.
