A short fiction contest entry.
The rise of the fire devils.

I'm twelve years old and on our annual school camp holiday where we sleep under canvas.
This evening is spent around a large camp fire with music as we toast our marshmallows over flaming logs. Flames dance through smelly wood smoke, while sparks leap skyward, before twisting back towards us; we call them 'fire devils.'
Then one fire devil went down the back of my neck under my clothing. My scream alerts the new boy Danny, who quickly grabs a bottle of water to douse it. While our eyes lock, I take a deep breath as my heart misses several beats.
Sleep escapes me tonight for the first time ever, with my mind full of feelings; the name "Danny" is on my lips. "Is this true love?" I ask myself.
