The Picky Kid's Lament

by DeboraDyess

She knows I don't like broccoli
but LOOK!! It's on my plate.
I think she has a cookbook called,
'The Foods That All Kids Hate'.

I look beside the yucky stuff
and, YIKES! It cannot be!
The other side she's serving me?
A mound of black-eyed peas!

"Eat all your food, grow big and strong,"
my mother's mantra goes.
But as I stare down at this stuff
my irritation grows!

I don't think I'm a picky kid.
I know that isn't nice.
But why can't dinnertime consist
of sugar on some rice?

Or candy, ice cream, cakes or pies,
Or even popcorn night!
'Cause then I'd eat the whole plateful
without the normal fight.

I think I will become a chef
creating food for kids.
My specialty will be a dish
where health and sweetness blends!
