Racing the storm

My Horse and I

by w.j.debi

The sky was bright celestial blue
with just a fluffy cloud or two,
when off we rode with spirits high
across the fields, my horse and I.

Enjoying sun and gentle breeze,
the sagebrush and the aspen trees,
oblivious to dark'ning sky,
we galloped on, my horse and I.

We'd traveled far before we heard
the rolling thunder. Be assured,
I gazed above with worried eye.
We turned for home, my horse and I.

Across the fields and down a slope,
we trotted then began to lope.
The sky took on a darker dye,
so we raced on, my horse and I.

Dismounting at the stable door
we stepped inside on cobbled floor,
then rain poured down. I breathed a sigh,
for we were safe, my horse and I.

Torrential rain now drenched the ground
and danced in puddles all around.
Amazed and grateful we were dry,
we watched the rain, my horse and I.

It started out as such a nice day and my horse and I were really enjoying ourselves. I gave the horse her head; she wanted to run so I was enjoying the speed and the scenery. I didn't have my watch or phone so I lost track of time, but we were gone at least an hour and probably more. Then we heard the thunder. We headed back and I kept an eye on the lightning, which is always a concern on horseback, but even more when you are the highest thing in the middle of open fields.

I prayed all the way back that we could make it before the storm reached us. Someone upstairs likes me because I stepped off the horse, we walked into the stable and it was like someone turned on a faucet to full. The rain was pounding the ground so hard it was bouncing four or five inches back up after it hit. If we'd have taken two seconds more, we would have been drenched. Whew!

Thanks to the potlatch club for the theme. I didn't realize it was supposed to be a cascade poem so I missed that part.
