A Roger's Refrain for the Potlatch Challenge

Return of the Monarch

by June Sargent

A butterfly came by today
to visit me and to display
his vibrant wings in full array.
His majesty came by today.

Each summer I anticipate
when lilacs bloom beside my gate.
My royal guest will not be late.
With pleasure I anticipate.

Blue dragonflies he'll joust in flight
within my garden of delight.
Winged creatures frolick in sunlight.
Til crickets sing he'll joust in flight.

But when the temps begin to fall,
he will respond to Nature's call.
His friends are waiting on the wall
as changing leaves begin to fall.

These monarchs are equipped to fly
3000 miles across the sky
In search of climate warm and dry.
Though dainty, they're equipped to fly.

Once winter's gone they will return.
Instinctively the young ones learn
to navigate without concern.
When lilacs bloom they will return.

Among the blossoms they will play.
Can't wait until the month of May.
