After the war...

A chapter in the book A Potpourri of Poetic Curiosities

An uneasy peace

by CD Richards

When Carthaginian peace breaks out
there's little cause to jump and shout.
The vanquished, so that they might live,
will suffer measures punitive.

In light of this, one might conclude
that they are well and truly screwed.
So if you'd rather not be poor,
don't take your nation off to war.

Today's word(s): Carthaginian Peace (n.) a peace settlement imposing severe penalties on the defeated parties.

My much-treasured Christmas present for 2017 is a book by Paul Anthony Jones: "The cabinet of linguistic curiosities". Each page contains a descriptive story about some obscure or archaic word. It occurred to me it would be a fun exercise to try and write, each day, a poem featuring the "word of the day" from the book.

Thanks for reading.
