My version of an African American fable

The Trash Talkin' Monkey

by nomi338

Way down in the jungle deep
The trash talkin' monkey stepped on the lion's feet,
then he quickly jumped back in the tree
The lion said, "look here fool, can't you see?
You just stepped on my aching feet!"
The monkey said, "I don't care what you say.
You better get ready for the dude, that's coming your way."
The monkey said, "He talked about your family in a disrespectful way,
and if you had been here, your hair might have turned gray.
Now Mister Lion, I know you don't play that,
and I don't know what you gon' do.
But the way this guy looks I would not want to be you.".
The lion was in a rage and he took off like a shot,
he was spoiling for a fight and his temper was red hot.
He ran up on the elephant and without a warning,
the lion sprang at the elephant like some bees a swarming
but he was caught in midflight,
and with his trunk, the elephant beat him all night
He stomped the lion with one foot and then he stomped him with another
And all the while he insulted his parents, his sister and his brother.
After a while the lion got away and he staggered back through the jungle,
more dead than alive
That is when the monkey started some more of his trash talkin' jive
"OMG. Now ain't you a hot mess.
I knew before you left, you weren't gon' have no success
Your nose is broken, and your eyes are all red
You are one big joke and you look half dead
I hate you because every time I take a nap
You start up with all that roaring crap
I never liked you and you were never my friend
I hope the elephant catches you and beats you up again
In his excitement the monkey's foot missed the limb and he fell to the ground
Immediately the lion was on him without making a sound
Tears began to flood that little monkey's eyes,
he knew that this was the end of his trash talkin' and lies.
Rest in pieces little monkey, rest in pieces.
The end.

This is a clean rendering of a rather bold and racy African American fable that dates back farther than I can remember and I am 75 years old. Yes it has been around for a very long time. The late African American Rudy Ray Moore popularized this fable in some adult recordings, but I do not think he is the originator. You can find his version on YouTube, but be warned, the language he uses can be offensive to anyone that objects to profanity. I felt the story too funny to not be shared with people sans the profanity. The title of the adult version is "The Signifying Monkey."
