A welcome surprise
Happy Paper
by Heather Knight
I've been playing guitar in Central Park for twenty years now.
It was okay when I was young, but now I'm tired.
There's an old lady sitting on a bench opposite me, her poodle dog on her lap. She's been watching me for at least two hours.
I bet she will eventually leave without giving me a single cent.
The dog is approaching me now and smelling my upturned hat. The lady is smiling at me and, without a word, she gives me a folded piece of paper. It's a check for five thousand dollars. Maybe dreams come true sometimes.
