Ode To My Front Door

by Barb Hensongispsaca

Oh, you gracious and wonderful thing;
whoever invented you had the world in mind,
for you are the one thing that opens everything
to reveal another time and place to us all.
You absolutely beautiful front door,
I can change your color to suit my mood;
I can open you to the brisk fresh air
or close you to the ugliness of man.
You open to reveal each new day's adventures
to be lived and cherished as gifts,
then you close, to shut out the days passing
that we may hold our families tight
as we put away thoughts of yesterday.

Oh, you gracious gift from times past,
how you have changed over the years
as you grew more important with age.
You became adorned with windows,
special designs, elaborate metal locks
as you became our protector in life.
You have been honored the task
of keeping our inner secrets safe
from the prying eyes of the world.
You put up with the abuse of being adorned
with holiday greetings, messages to family,
scratches and tears from family pets
and angry neighbors,
as you keep the dog in and the skunk out,
and you do it all
with quiet grace and poise.

To you, my dear friend,
the door of my dreams and wonders,
fears and nightmares,
guardian of my life,
protector of my family-
I sing your praise and gladly
tell the world of your strength and faithfulness.
