Duchess of York
caresses pearls from Cape Horn
booty of Max Caddy
Free verse ~
The proud English lady displays elegant pearls -
twisted in her delicate hands.
Reminiscing, her thoughts list over the bow,
into the pirate days of Cap'n Cook.
An oceanic breeze... sailing away with jiggers, mizzen, and lugsails;
catching the southern hemisphere trade winds.
Thousands of seafarers perished attempting to sail around the cape.
A secluded lighthouse and tiny Stella-Maris Chapel nearby,
as the albatross and seagull dive-bomb for crustation, krill, and sardines.
Sails stretched from Lima Peru to Cape Horn -
surrounded by wild seas off the southern tip of South America
- to Panama.
An Anchor Clanker's quest for sunken treasures near coral reefs.
Cap'n Max Caddy's notes in a dusty log book which came with the pearls.
Tis' the history of these extravagant pearls,
Aye -- aye, scurvy dog, Cap'n Caddy did not fear the Cape
Amelia Ainsworth reads Max Caddy's log book journal...

as before; but I was much better pleased, when, in opening them,
we found a -
hundred and fifty-eight pearls, of the perfect color,
and of extraordinary shape and size, and, irregular shape.
This quickened our diligence, and encouraged our men,
for I promised the men two pieces of eight to each man above his pay -
if I got any considerable quantity of pearl...
