Choices

by Janet Foor

There's drama in the sky tonight.
Dark brooding clouds are blown around.
Their angry edges give a fright
to wildlife who are shelter-bound.

We too seek shelter from the storm;
with frenzied steps, we circle round
to frantic measures we perform --
in awe, we panic, held spellbound.

Great bolts of lightning quickly dash
like jagged swords they break the veil --
they stab the ground with each new flash,
as wicked winds begin to wail.

From my front window, I can see
rain pouring, pounding every hill.
The storm is raging right toward me --
it gives my frightened heart a chill.

I'm swept away with each new sound,
as rolling thunder passes by --
but to the west, blue skies abound
with beauty, causing me to sigh.

Beyond the blue, a sunset glows.
It shimmers there before my eyes,
like silky apricot and rose --
a scene to surely hypnotize.

And so, we choose our daily bread
from dark to light and in between.
Sometimes a single goss'mer thread
will hold our lives in peace serene.

Recognized

Last night the sky was amazing. In one direction, I could see storms brewing and lightning flashing in the clouds as it seemed to be moving ever closer. Then I looked behind me and there was a glorious sunset melting into the horizon. And I thought, that's like my life. If I go in one direction, it's dark and filled with peril but if I choose wisely, there are opportunities for grace and joy. For the most part, the choice is mine.
