The madwoman in the attic

Bertha

by Heather Knight

Long ago and far away,
You loved me too.

Just because my hair is tangled
And I can't remember
When I last used a comb,
You think I can't suffer.

Long ago and far away,
I was a pretty girl.

In my attic,
I rot
And you don't care.
But I feel my feelings,
I still burn inside.

Long ago and far away,
I was your bride.

That woman that guards me
Is no nurse.
She doesn't know how to nurture.
I live all alone.

Long ago and far away,
My eyes shone in the moonlight.

Now I'm dead inside,
Cause you call me crazy.
You never come to visit,
You just think of her.

Long ago and far away,
You caressed my face.

I know what you're doing.
I know you plan to marry her.
But I will stop you,
I will tear her veil.

Long ago and far away,
I wore white silk too.

If everything else fails,
I will burn you alive.
I'm still your wife.
Jealousy devours me.

Long ago and far away,
You said you'd be mine forever.

You'll never be free,
I'll be in your conscience.
Whenever you court her,
You will see my face.

Long ago and far away,
You said madness was just a word.
