Steve Dahl's disco demolition

July 12, 1979

by HarryT

Sixty thousand in the stands
Very few were baseball fans
The night was hot and steamy
Unruly crowd behaving sleazy

Many drunk and losing it
Spewing hate for disco music

Marijuana scent drifted in swirling bands
Whiskey and joints passed to eager hands
Black vinyl discs flying like Frisbees
Comiskey, this night, no place for sissies

Many stoned and losing it
Spewing hate for disco music

Radio host, Steve Dahl the ringleader
Playing the role of disco's grim reaper
His disorderly army filled every seat
Curses rising in the blistering heat

Many drunk and losing it
Spewing hate for disco music

The upper deck swayed from side to side
Chants of "Burn Baby Burn" intensified
Beer bottles sailed over team dugouts
The fellas there were no boy scouts

Many stoned and losing it
Spewing hate for disco music

General Dahl trotted to the center field bullpen
Blew up a bin of disco records and yelled, "Amen"
His army spilled from the stands every damn one
A scene worthy of Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451
