Why?

by Ogden

Prompt: Every stanza must begin or end with a question. (See author note below the poem)

Why?

When do children first ask why?
As soon as they learn to talk?
Maybe when they learn to walk,
Or think, ”I'll give it a try?”

Well, the later the better,
Wise moms and dads should agree.
When the whys begin, they’ll see!
Why is why an upsetter?

It’s easier for them to ask,
Than for parents to reply!
To tell the truth, or to lie?
Which one is the harder task?

Can parents find solutions,
Confident they’ll resonate?
Answers that encapsulate
Kids' circumlocutions?

(A glossary is available below the poem, if desired)

Let's be sure before we start.
Maybe we should hesitate?
Maybe
wait
to procreate,
Til we're sufficiently smart?
