Bierstadt's Vision

Bierstadt's eyes
saw the West as God must
through wisps
of mist rising
from
emerald lakes
to
gleaming
sun-kissed chalky cliffs
towering
over
a world
immensely
quiet.

This painting is titled "Mountain Lake" and was painted by Albert Bierstadt during many of his trips to the West (1868).

Albert Bierstadt was one of the first American painters to travel west and paint first-hand what he saw. His landscapes are renowned for their focus on sunlight and the natural wilderness he admired. The light symbolizes the Romantic idealism of his time.
