Ali, My Idol

Ali, My Idol
                     by michael cahill

He was the greatest of all time!
Grace in motion,
pure magic-- the fighter sublime.
Self-promotion
became the new game in his hand.
He hyped like a glor’ous brass band--
the pure joy of such commotion.

                    ... my devotion

Then he spoke for those without voice,
sacrificing--
his fortune and fame with his choice,
hate enticing.
Most would have him down in repose.
With true courage, this man arose!
He stood tall, self-sacrificing,
with all rising.

Obviously modified considerably.

Not much to say. I'm not one for idols and the like. This man was my idol. As an athlete, I've modeled my life after his. Competition should be outrageous fun and a striving to be the very, very best that you can be. You have to put yourself out there totally. What better way than to shoot your big mouth off and set yourself up for the biggest failure of your lives. I do it all the time. Wow, do they ever stand in awe when you succeed. :))
As a person, Ali stood up for what he believed in against a tsunami of hatred. I hope that I do that for myself and more so that I would do that for a friend. That's what I learned from him.
