My Favorite Tree

by Janet Foor

I climbed this way and that, up my favorite tree
Then sat down on a branch to see what I could see.
Soon a fluffy grey squirrel came scampering ‘round
and he dashed to the top of the tree and then down.

I was wondering what in the world would come next
When I spied a red cardinal looking perplexed.
An old woodpecker noisily pecked on my tree
He was looking around and surprised to see me.

Then a blue jay was squawking right over my head
At that moment, I wished that I’d stayed in my bed.
So I made a retreat to the trunk of the tree
Where I spotted an ant, oh my, no! There were three.

As the evening had come and the stars were all out
It had been a great day in my tree, ‘twas no doubt.
Then I heard my dear mother as she called to me
So I quickly climbed down from my favorite tree.
