Ode to Shoes

by mfowler

Shoes maketh the man
I've been told
Define the swagger of the bragger
Black or tan
From corny ends and hammered toes
and feet that pong like putrid puss
The shoe's the thing
to avert the fuss
On legs like stalks of withered corn
or bulging calves that boast with pride
It's shoes that shine
That blow the horn
Each grinning wide with every stride
Match the shoes with manly needs
A leather boot for swinging steel
Match the shoes to daily deeds
The man'll know how good feels
A puppy pair all swathed in suede
will set a foot on padded paths
A stylish choice that will not fade
escorts you to your morning baths
The crocodile skin that screams out Gucci
gives the class to business dudes
No tears to shed if worn loosely
The casual style suits varied moods
But match the threads to chosen shoes
Dress up boots look bad with shorts
Let sneakers scream we've got great news
They match my sweats on tennis courts
The feet need feeding like kingly men
Don't give 'em daggy or holey soles
Choose plush, or leather, feel their ken
Make shoe choices for all your roles
Build the man from toe to head
and cover feet with shoes of choice
Maketh the man before he's dead
Let quality demand a voice

Inspired by Pablo Neruda's 'Ode to Socks'..very clever.
