The Almond Trees

Poem of the Month contest entry

These almond trees at Brooklands were probably planted by the Williamson family, shortly before the First World War. They owned the property from 1900 through until 1945 and established a thriving horticultural business, almost all traces of which were wiped out by bushfire in 1959.
The 1959 bushfire reached the outskirts of Port Elliot township, stopping short of the drive-in cinema, which happened, incidentally, to be showing a film called 'The Raging Inferno' at the time!
Photographs by the author.
The occasional in-line rhymes in this poem are there for assonance, though purists will possibly take issue on that.
