Audience With the Demons

by Eternal Muse

 I wait till the darkness silently creeps,
light the candles and close all my shutters;
And in the library filled with objects d'art
I conduct a solemn audience with my demons.

There are six of them out there, waiting for me -
my retainers, my soldiers and my creation.
I look at each one, sworn to me on his blood
and waive my hand at their joint salutation.

"Well, let's begin, my good demons - on agenda today
is what to do with my current unique situation:
After years of harboring demons - the sad likes of you
It's a fairly maiden I met, and she wants my salvation.

Oh, she is beautiful, gifted and smart - you would love her,
And strangely, she sees something good in your master.
She knows I'm demon possessed, but she just doesn't care,
She knows I have blood and am not made of plaster.

To be with her, I would have to part with my soul -
And to you, demons, I offer it at a fair market value.
Once you purchase it, I can be redeemed, I can be hers -
So, what do you say - it's a deal?  should I tell her?"

The demons look at me thunderstruck, and shake their heads,
For a moment dead silence falls over the lonely mansion;
And when they speak, my heart pounds, I don't know what I'll hear -
But relieved we can finally break all that tension.

"You're our lord, our master, saviour, our creator,
Who are we to dictate your own actions?
When you needed us, we were born, at your will.
But you don't need us, your soul's now yours, and we'll leave -
so you can finally live a full life, free from our distraction..."

The demons refused to purchase my soul...

This was written about ten years ago, when I was just beginning to write verse. It doesn't have the rhyming and meter pattern my works of today have, but you can see that I was fascinated with rhyme from the beginning.
