You've heard the name, it's Mattie Silks.
I'm not a "soiled dove."
A madam, yes, that tale is true,
but men can't buy my love.

My House of Mirrors on Market Street
is famous for its faire.
I bought it from a wealthy whore
whose clients still come there.

The parlor has much opulence:
a crystal chandelier,
a golden harp and brocade chairs
each wall a plate glass mirror.

My girls possess a pretty face,
the tiniest of waists.
I never hire an innocent
and old ones are replaced.

Two pockets has each gown I own.
I fill one with my gold.
An ivory-handled derringer
is what the other holds.

A "love merchant" is what I'm called.
You think I'm bold and shady.
Entrepreneur extraordinaire,
but always I'm a lady!

Mattie Silks, pictured above at the height of her profession, was the undisputed "Queen of Denver's Red Light District" from 1876 until her death in 1929.

"soiled dove" is western slang for prostitute.

She bought the House of Mirrors in 1909 from her arch-rival Jennie Rogers.

Mattie hired only experienced prostitutes who enjoyed the trade; she refused to lure any innocent girls into the profession.

She once claimed to have an estate worth more than $2 million.
