A chapter in the book The Heart of Poetry

Wonders of Winter

by Carolyn 'Deaton' Stephens

* Long before the car tracks
* Could mar the pristine blanket of snow *
The sun was rising to break
* Through the banked clouds of sleepy dawn **
* *
Roofs of neighborhood houses wrapped
* In comforters of frozen fluff * *
Like feather beds of luxury *
Draping neatly on gables and peaks

No birds on the wing nor rabbits on the move
Just quiet solitude
* As the town sits in silence *
Waiting for the children to emerge
** And break upon the drifts
Like playful dolphins * *
* In the sea *
*
* *
Ah yes ******* the wonders of winter

Free Verse Poetry Contest contest entry

Sometimes free verse gives the writer such freedom. There is something about the gleeful sounds of children playing in the snow that warms the heart. Even in the deep, deep grip of winters cold.
Pays one point and 2 member cents.
