Who is to say that the ocean will not get you?

Thalassophobia

by Sis Cat

The waves gnaw at the continent's edge
Like mice on a stale cracker
The swells batter the hotel wall
Instead of a vacation I am under siege

Nothing separates me from the ocean
There is no beach just ocean
The rush rush rush of waves
Scale the wall and storm my room like Ninjas

I press my fingertips against the glass
It vibrates and I feel the ocean's heart
Beat breathe inhale exhale

I slide the glass door and venture onto the balcony
It trembles and I peer over the parapet
Black waves suck sand from the hotel's pilings

I retreat inside and lock the door, as if to stop the ocean.

Writing Prompt
Write a 10-15 line free verse poem about a phobia you may have. We all have something that very much frightens us.

Recognized

Thalassophobia is fear of the ocean. I felt this after the 2011 Japanese tsunami. I fear drowning in my sleep at beachside hotels such as the Costa Sur in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. The ocean was right outside the wall. I stayed up at night and wrote this poem instead. I revised this poem after a FanStory posting in January.

I thank Angelina Onofrio's "The Drowning."
