Grathborne's Wrath Escaped

by michaelcahill

Grathborne's Wrath Escaped

In oaken copse Grathborne dwells in wait
with patience born of captive time in tower
endless years to dwell and contemplate
conviction falsely came to by Duke's power

The Duke of Sanford ruled with law by fear
his subjects loathe to challenge lest they pay
with trembling knees they bowed when he was near
they dwelled in shadows living day by day

There was a time when Grathborne smiled with love
before his heart was blackened with cru'l fate
Fair Lauralee seemed sent from stars above
but time replaced his raptured joy with hate

The time drew near the Duke would soon be by
from tree limb poised, he watched the carriage come
he pounced upon his prey from up on high
with knife he slashed and watched the Duke succumb

Fair Lauralee screamed out for she was next,
this killer's eyes held naught but vengeful glee.
For Grathborne's life had turned so sorely hexed,
what he once was, was not left there to see.

He looked to her with blood stained vacant eyes.
He said, "I've come to take what's mine, let's go".
Sweet memories of warmth and loving ties
seemed lost, she whispered, "you, I do not know".

"I've rotted in that tower without cause,
long dreaming of the day we'd reunite.
I loved you ev'ry moment without pause
and now you answer me with hateful spite?"

"There was a man who long ago I loved
and from my side one day was wrongly took.
But you're not he, with vengeance you are gloved.
It's hate that rules you; love you have forsook."

He searched his heart and found the truth she spoke,
for what he felt was sweet retaliation.
Though hard he tried, no love could he invoke.
Bereft, he sighed in bitter resignation.

Fair Lauralee with mercy spared his life,
remeb'ring she had once been his fair flower
He sadly knew she could not bear his strife,
but was not death much kinder than the tower?

Deadly Sins writing prompt entry
Writing Prompt
Write a poem that involves one of the seven deadly sins

Recognized

The deadly sins are not always simply come to through weakness as is often portrayed. There is often great pressure brought to bear behind them. Perhaps sloth is born of parents who constantly demeaned their child until they ceased to care. Gluttony, a substitution for the emptiness one feels inside. Just thoughts. A kind person reaches out and doesn't condemn.
