When you don't have clean clothes, go to school naked

Willy Dare

by Sis Cat

Standing before his closet bare,
Willy Dare wondered what to wear.
His clothes, unlaundered, in despair.
Isn't that extraordinaire?

Ran Willy Dare to day school bare,
although the children laughed and stared.
He was sent home by Miss Zaire
in a cardboard box three feet square!

And Willy Dare will never fare
another pair of underwear,
spill juice on suits of camel's hair,
nor static cling, loose strings that snare.

Can Willy wake from his nightmare?
Alas! He's saved by mother's pair
of hands that dressed him with due care
in shirt, pants, shoes, and underwear!

I wrote "Willy Dare" thirty years ago. I still perform this poem today. Kids love the naughtiness of the boy who dared to go bare.

I am submitting this poem for publication. Which age group do you think would enjoy it?

Here is the YouTube link to my recitation of "Willy Dare" at an Oakland poetry event:
