A chapter in the book The Heart of Poetry

The Beckoning of the West

by Carolyn 'Deaton' Stephens

The frost lay crisp upon the grass
as I rose and viewed the new morning
My car started with a bit of sluggish sound
it struggled to remove the icy particles
trapped along the edges of the windshield

As I entered the ramp to the freeway
The early morning sunshine met its mark
And for a moment I was blinded by the light
Ah yes... the West.. The West is beckoning me
The warmth of the desert and its charm
Are twisting my arm once more.. Come out west
Ah yes.. the West.. the West is beckoning me

Through Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas and New Mexico
Highways stretch with vanishing point ahead
Like a well-balanced landscape spread on an artist easel
Sprays of color mingle to blend an array of prismatic delight
Mountains rise in far distance a continental divide
Tall cedars and aspens guarding the forest as sentinels
Elk graze close to highway, unafraid of motorized activity
The west is beckoning as onward I go

Descending from the mountain where pinion and cedar thrive
Saguaro and other cactus dot the rock and are havens for fowl and fur
the valley is now in full view ,the Arizona desert lies on either side.
Sunshine's through the windshield and I find I must rid myself
of my coat. Palms and oleanders embellish the roadway,
magpies hop along cheerily and bikers
pedal to a tune only they can hear.
Aw yes.. the west has beckoned and I have arrived...

Very minimal punctuation.. I have written this in singular however, my hubby and I will be leaving for Arizona on 1/13/2015.. I took this photo last August, we had stopped for Indian Tacos. This was the scene behind the roadside stand. Off the interstate, somewhere in New Mexico.
