S.A.D. /Crocodile Tears

by Dawn Munro

S.A.D. /Crocodile Tears

Does blossom blame the winter snow,
or stone the hand of Father Time?
My steps are weary, frazzled, worn -
this winter's really hit its prime.

My life is frozen like the bloom
that dies as soon as frost arrives.
My heart is fractured badly too
by those around whose words are lies.

Clear logic doesn't always rule,
and I'M the one the boss then blames!
Some so-called 'friends' are very cruel -
confuse me with their wicked games.

I generally refuse to play,
but there is more than one sharp blade.
When sunny days have been replaced,
I stumble in the gloom and shade

that's always found when Fall recedes.
This wretched season - worst of all!
It wounds the psyche, makes it bleed.
The winter months cast such a pall.

Not merely cold, they're dark and damp.
But wait! What's that my eyes do see?
Some homeless bugger's set up camp -
Almighty God, what's wrong with me?

A furnace blazes in my home,
there's food aplenty on my plate -
Electric lamps all light my way
when I'm arriving home so late.

I need no 'friends' when He will do!
My heart's grown selfish, love so worn.
The fabric of my happiness
without Him near is dirty - torn.

Christ Jesus is my saving grace,
and I should bend my knee and pray -
my whining is a sad disgrace!
I should give thanks for every day

regardless of the tiny trials -
just look what others have to face!
Let's see what I can do to help -
of kindness I must have some trace...

In no way do I mean to downplay the effects of Seasonal Affective Disorder (S.A.D.) - in fact, some winters I think I might have a touch of it myself. I'm well aware it is a very real affliction, but I honestly believe in itself, it's not a serious, chronic depression. I think we can get into a funk on those very long winter nights, but if we just extend ourselves a little to those with more serious troubles, it can do wonders for our own spirits. (And yes, light therapy helps too.)

Okay - I'm off my soapbox now. (*grin*) But please, watch the video - it's so beautiful it brought me to tears!
