A chapter in the book The Heart of Poetry

The Soul

by Carolyn 'Deaton' Stephens

It doesn't matter young or old
We all are blessed with a spirit
Called Soul

It comes within a body born
A physical casing shrouds
its form

It was given us by the living God
Long before on earth
we trod

He breathed the breath of life
into the image he made
like Himself

And empowered that spirit
The soul if you will, to reflect
His light

The soul can be happy, contrite or sad
It is the essence of our being
inner man

It comes equipped to know right from wrong
It can be poetic , lilting in song
our attitude

When the soul passes from this life
to the next , God claims what
is His

The spirit leaves the body and returns
to the Lord who made it, He will give
its reward
