Carefree Days Ahead

I loved that day when school let out
and Summer beckoned us
to shuck our books and run footloose
and forget that silly bus.

The trees were leafed, the sky all blue,
the sun so warm we laughed.
Our friends came swooping down the lane,
a flock of geese gone daft.

We teased some giggling girls we saw
and hooted when they screamed.
And then we pranced around each one
until their braces gleamed.

When Petey threw a ball he found,
we skipped around those gals
and trotted off to play some catch
with other school-free pals.

That day fled by like all the rest
and ended much too fast,
yet it's the one recalled the most
of summers in my past.

A wonderful painting by Norman Rockwell (courtesy Google images).

It's been many years since school days for me, but I vividly remember the first day of summer vacation when I was in middle school (aka junior high). Can you?
