Escape

by dejohnsrld (Debbie)

Escape

Dwellings so close, neighbors visible in living rooms. Cars speed by, stereos pound. Constant noise in sea of cement. Always a rush, so much to do.

man’s impositions
litter former prairie
nature interrupted

Miles of city lie before free-growing, lush countryside. Deer and birds feed on wild plants. Life slows to snail’s pace.

flora and fauna
coexist as one
absence of man

Muddy road leads to solitary log cabin. Weathered wooden bridge over trickling creek, squeaks and groans. Car parked. Last quarter mile walked, supplies in backpack. Nature offers feast for senses. Lakeshore waves splash against stones. Birds call. Fresh air replaces car exhaust. All around, wildflowers bloom.

 wind blows rose petals
 onto tall prairie grass
pink confetti

Cabin door creaks open, too long since used. Vow to return more often, refuge for a weary mind.
