Who am I?

by alexisleech

Tell me please...who am I? It all seems such a daze
The curtains look familiar though, their pattern cuts the haze
of uncertainty I feel about my actions every day,
especially when I get confused about what I do and say

Who is he? The handsome one who comes to hold my hand
I fail to recognise him, but he always seems to understand
I’m sure he’s being familiar when he kisses me on the cheek,
but I vaguely recollect him doing a similar thing last week

Who is she? The bewildered girl who often calls me mother
I think the poor demented soul has confused me with another
A pretty girl, with bright blue eyes, she looks a lot like him
Will someone please explain to them, they’re not my kith or kin

Surely they must understand, or are they all befuddled?
Perhaps they’re just a bit like me, and get a little muddled
For every day I walk alone, my heart so full of longing
As I search the faces looking for... a sense of me belonging

Originally written as a competition entry, I posted this without promotion, but inspired by some lovely reviews I have decided to buy it some exposure. Alzheimers is a horrible disease, but none of us know what the future holds, and I can't help but think that writing could be one way for all of us to protect our memories, just in case...

My thanks to Timster for the use of his wonderful image.
Pays one point and 2 member cents.
