Past Redemption
by AlvinTEthington
iambic pentameter; abab cdcd efef gg rhyme scheme; turn at the ninth line
I really thought that you would be the one...
Alone for twelve withdrawn, unfriendly years, The game of pure romance I never won. The solace that you gave kept me from tears. The days seemed brighter with your love and grace; My faith in human kindness was restored. I saw God's own reflection in your face; I thought I knew "true love" was just not lore. Another, though, you found and loved again-- A man from former times I thought long past. Your happiness can only cause me pain; I did not think your love for him would last. My grief has been a lifelong foe and friend; The cycle past redemption will not end. |
