AFTER SHE SWALLOWED THE PILLS

She lay alone with painted fingernails,
the cat he gave her sleeping by her breast,
and waited for his footsteps on the stairs,
her make-up flawless, her gown neatly pressed.

Distraught, obsessed with winning back his love,
she’d laid the empty bottle near her bed.
Unable to revive his waning passion,
she’d win his heart by sympathy instead.

Long dormant memories came floating back.
Warm nights.  Warm kisses.  Scars that never healed.
Promises.  (Some kept, some long forgotten.)
Whispered words of love.  Dreams unfulfilled.

The ornate clock across the room ticked on,
her mind and flesh now growing cold and numb.
Reality was silent on the stairs.
Too late she realized he would not come.

Writing Prompt
Sadness has overcome us all at one time or another. Either caused by a relative or close friend's death or from the girl or guy that broke our heart or just life in general. We all handle situations differently, some good, some bad. This contest gives us the ability to explore this. Your poem can also play into other emotions that are common to writing like this such as anger or depression.
