A Deadly Awakening

by Idamarty

The road was barely lit that night,
Thick white fog hid the moon from my sight.
The stillness embraced the darkened wood,
I pulled the lever to check under my hood.

Wire hung in a tangled mess,
How this had happened, I couldn`t guess.
A memory of a man with eyes like glass,
Checking the oil and pumping the gas.

His skin so pale, he looked to be,
Devoid of life, or so it seemed to me.
I`d paid him in cash when he`d told me the price,
Our hands had touched, his was cold as ice.

And now I stand in the still dark night,
Shaking from cold, trembling with fright.
Turning my head from side to side,
Wondering what to do, I had to decide.

And so I left the road, I walked away,
Imagination running, I couldn`t stay.
Through the pitch dark blackness I stumbled through,
Frogs croaked, mocking me, where thickets grew.

Finally a light came into view,
As I moved forward its brightness grew.
Into a clearing the light led me,
Where gravestones` shadows cast eerily.

They stood in lonely isolation,
I looked around in desperation.
I heard a wolf howl, lone and distant,
And in that moment, in that instant,

The man with eyes like hardened glass,
Barred my way, I couldn`t pass.
He grabbed my throat and pulled me down,
My breathing shallow as I hit the ground.

I fought with all the strength I had,
For just an instant I felt quite sad.
That I would never live to see,
Once more my friends or family.

But then quite suddenly he loosened his grip,
And pulled me over to a lonely crypt.
I read the name, it couldn`t be!
I read again, yes it was me!

From deep inside his laughter came,
It echoed cruelly, it wasn`t sane.
Realization dawned and my hope grew dim,
I was not alive, I was dead like him!

Memories flooded through my mind,
To the eyes whose soul I could not find.
While looking through my rearview mirror,
His contorted features had appeared.

For he had taken me by surprise,
This thing with the cold and lifeless eyes.
He had taken my life, condemned me to be,
His zombie bride for all eternity.

If ever you`re traveling on a dark, moonless night,
Don`t stop, keep going or you may share my plight.
For we are the undead, we are an evil breed,
And upon your living flesh, we will feed!
