Not all muttering is bad!

A chapter in the book Dear Lexi

Mutterings

by Rdfrdmom2

Some things, we just cannot explain, but give us about which to think.

safely cradled
in the cavity created
by my arm and ribs
you finally fall
into an uneasy sleep
sucking fingers
twirling hair
~ your trademarks ~
give way to
raspy snores
ear tugging
twitching toes

suddenly
I am utterly transfixed
as your tiny hands
come together
under your chin
~ prayer mode ~
happenstance, perchance
yet
those little lips
begin muttering words
too softly
to be deciphered

an hour passes
snoring continues
as do soft mutterings
in your prayer pose

are you and God chatting
as you are resting?
is He telling you
all is well –
the ear infection, virus,
and whatever other germs
are attacking you
are under His control?

as your fever rises
you begin smiling
arms waving about
lips moving
but no sound emanates
from your sweet mouth
arms drop into your lap
hands firmly clasped
as if in preparation
for future prayer

you’re breathing peacefully now
I find myself torn –
wake you up
to administer meds
OR
see this journey through
to its natural finish

part of me
is frightened
what phenomena is
God allowing me to witness?
What will you remember
when you awaken?

you find my hand
making one last comment
before opening those hazel eyes
flashing a dazzling smile
and transmitting unconditional love

the unconditional love
of which I have no doubt
was shared with you from above
during your nap

Thanks to Homerladybella for the use of "Dear God", the closest picture I could find to share what it's like to see a small child in the prayer pose. This is a wonderful picture.

My 29-month old granddaughter, Alexis, spiked a fever of 103.9° on Sunday, June 19, 2011. We spent several hours in the local Children•¿
