Land of Flooding Rains ... We Really Are:

Down Under!

by closetpoetjester

Down Under!

Australia faces brand new year
Precipitation at the verge
La Nina looms, then pelts down fear
As rains would flood and towns submerge

Monsoonal trough from Coral Sea
Meets Tropic Cyclone Tasha ... "Eeeeeeee!"

Three major rivers peak at will
The Fitzroy, Burnett, Condamine
Terrential downpours drench and fill
With system flushed right down the line

In Sunshine State where sunshine grows
The deluged crops host overflows

The towns are cut, the numbers mount
Frustration; anger, hard to cope
The damage, loss?  One billion count
Though early, futures bleak with hope

Nine highways closed, three hundred roads
No trucks transporting heavy loads

Whole towns could just be wiped from map
Co-ordinates will sink below
The murky deep where crocs now snap
Is there no end to all this woe?

There's more bad news as floods abound
That spiders, snakes seek higher ground

As record rains and floods converge
Insurance haunts some retrospects
Ten lives are lost in waters surge
Two hundred thousand it affects

As folks entrust their homes to fate
They pray as they evacuate

Despite their strength through this ordeal
'Down Under' never felt so real!

Firstly, "Down Under" is a term used to refer to where Australia is on the globe but has somehow become one of Australia's most endearing nicknames. So Australia is now affectionately known in many countries as "Down Under".

For those who don't keep up with world news Australia is in the midst of major floods in the state of Queensland.

"Sunshine State" refers to Queensland ... as it enjoys many beautiful sunny days. It also is the recipient of some very wild storms, cyclones etc and many a flood. These ones however are the worst to hit in a big way for quite some years.

Some quick facts:
*** An estimate on the colossal damage has now been amended from 1 billion to 7 billion. Ouch!
22 towns majorly affected.
At least 2 or 3 cut completely off already. One of these is expecting daily rain for the next month so there are grave fears for Rockhampton.
Emerald, Bundaberg and Rockhampton are the 3 towns worst hit.
Others recorded highest floods ever.
Wettest December on record in Queensland's capital city Brisbane since 1859.

There is a ton of info if you Google it and way too much to mention here.

This is a Extended Quatret. The Quatret was invented by suegalletti of Fanstory and consists of four stanzas of abab rhyme with five couplets spaced alternately between them in aa rhyme. The couplets should read seperately as their own poem and the same for the stanzas. They are also read as one complete poem.
The content was so extensive for this poem I had to extend by one extra stanza and couplet.
