An Irish Sea Memory

by Warren Rodgers

An Irish flute plays in my head
The whistling softly calls to me
Back to the place of many friends
Back to the time along the sea

Across the oceans waves and skies
A picture that portrays just two
To places where my heart collides
With special times I've shared with you

I see the fishing boats below
The village framed by fields of green
The lighthouse beckons with a glow
So beautiful and so serene

Oh what I'd give to stand upon
That towering cliff along the sea
And bring you back from where you've gone
To hand in hand, stand next to me

To feel your shoulders in my arms
As cold wind whips the crispy air
To hold you close and safe from harm
To touch your long and silky hair

To weave your fingers into mine
And share a gaze with your green eyes
Back to the year now etched in time
The magic place of no goodbyes

One captured beat of your true heart
Shown in a frame for all to see
Is now a small but sweetest part
Of everything you gave to me

Thanks to MyShangrilah for the beautiful photo. The photo is from Scotland and it comes close to what I remember of Irelands eastern coast.

Before my wife passed away in 2006, our daughter was a member of Special Olympics team USA 2003 for the Summer world games held in Ireland. My wife and I attended this wonderful event as parents and spectators. This poem recalls a few days we spent on the Irish Sea thanks to our wonderful irish host and hostess's hospitality. We will never forget our special experience in Ireland. The Special Olympics theme song that year was a beautiful song entitled "May We Never Have To Say Goodbye", thus my reference on the last line of the sixth quatrain. The song is available on U-tube in many versions. I recommend those with vocals and big choirs. Our daughter won a silver medal in golf that year. We begin this years practice later today.
