The Pest Guest

by Claire Tennant

Mr Spider you are in the way
it seems you prefer to stay
safe in the little cage
where you demand centre-stage
I enter it's my cage
and though I'm not in a rage
I know how to deal with you
it's both a cage and shower too

The water sprays I see you crawl
sedately up the wall
ignoring my feeble attempt
to put you off my scent
you climb up the damp glass
such a slow but elegant task
as the water soothes my fears
I wait it seems for years

You seem determined to stay
very much in my way
and though your legs are a little bent
I'm hoping for an eventual descent
into the puddle on the floor
but no, you crawl on the door

I give up I don't have all day
and you are blocking my way
reluctantly I leave the cage
I don't need centre stage
