An exploration of hope and resilience in times of drought

The drover's life

by Isobella Munro

Scorched earth
and sawdust fields
Life torn away

May hope find safe passage
with everything laid bare
Chlorophyll leaves a mere memory

As dreams become ambushed
by drought's brutality
The resilience of the human spirit
announces its arrival

A presence so fragile
yet strong enough
to carry the burdens of the human heart
wounded by the helplessness of it all

As Australia is entering what may be a brutal summer, my thoughts and prayers are extended to all of our farmers and their families and livestock.

In writing this poem, I cast my mind back to when my time growing up on a sheep station in rural Australia.
