Emeralds are a girls best friend

A chapter in the book I Choose Rainbows

The Gold Beyond The Rainbow

by sholessjo

             Verse One. Headaches

My migraines
Shut me down

It is a condition
That exists
In the reality
Of the physical world

With a physical body
That ages
To the randomness
Of time

I live in a body
With a sleepy mind

Exhaustion abounds
Vertigo exists
And hypnotic sounds
Sharp with harsh
Screech confusion

Circulating pressures
Intertwining like a band
Crush my head

Like the squeeze
On a tennis ball

That presses upward
And outward
Into itself
Exhausting motion
Distorting vision
And making opaque
The perception of reality

And I sleep

Functioning moves to non existence
Motivation vanishes
And the clouds
Of pain
That taunt my head
Disappear into a dream

Arcs of color
Flash

ROY G BIV
I think to myself

The colors swarm
It is a rainbow
Exploding with light

Disappearing into the mist
As the Sun shines brightly
Through the whiteness
Of a cloud laden sky

Dreams float images

Dorothy appears
And Toto barks welcome

Follow me
Dorothy yells
I'm off to see the Wizard

We can follow the rainbow
To the yellow brick road

Im going back to Kansas

She smiled
And held my hand

I was young again

We skipped along
Laughing

I'm choosing rainbows
I yelled

I'm off to see the Wizard too

I heard he gives cures

                                                       The Gold Beyond The Rainbow

What is the point of seeing
When life
Denies the perception
Of your thoughts
And you are lost
In the fantasy
Of time

Dorthy
Wait up

I'm only pretending
To be young
And I have Migraines

Can we stop

There's an apple tree
Atop the edge
Of the hill

We can rest there
I'll pick you
The bestest
And biggest Apple

You can tell me
All about Kansas

Bow wow
Bark bark
Toto yelped

He knew
Kansas

Dorothy laughed
As they reached the top
Of the hill
With the greenest of grass
And the most delicious looking
Red apples

Yum
I yelled

We can bring Oz
A bushel full

Good idea
Dorthy thought

We'll bring Oz
The bestest of the bestest

Ow
I yelled

An apple hit my leg

OMG
Dorothy shouted

A tree
Is throwing apples

LEAVE ME ALONE
The tree commanded

An apple
Swished
Nearly hitting Dorothy

LEAVE HER ALONE
I ordered back

YOUR A MEAN AND SELFISH
APPLE TREE
Dorthy squealed

WOOF WOOF
Toto scowled

We were tired and hungry
Dorthy shouted

We followed the rainbow
To the yellow brick road

It was crazy

We saw a flying house
Squash a witch

Singing little people
Gave us flowers

I'm walking around
Wearing glassy red ruby shoes
That hurts to heck when I walk

An ugly green witch
With a green twisted
Elongated pimply nose
Is flying around
On a straw broom
Chasing us

There's these crazy looking monkey guys
With thick bee like wings
Flying around
Trying to catch us
And eat us

And the yellow brick road
Has bumps and puddles
From the rain

I miss Kansas

Toto barked and growled
At the apple  tree

I'm hungry
I yelled
At the big mouthed
Apple tree

All we want are a few apples

You're making my migraines worse
And Dorothy is crying

The wind blew
The apple tree shook

And the limbs of the tree
Began to vibrate

THE TREE ROARED
Its apple wooden eyes opening wide
It's mouth dripping
Thick syrupy
Apple juice
Began speaking
In a soft
Rich
And sympathetic voice

I could cry for you
I'm not a mean old
Apple tree

It's the bitchy witch of the West

She came in the middle of the night
While I was sleeping

Doesn't even wake me
To say hello

She just stole my Apples
And gave them to those hideous flying monkeys

I was scared
I hate her

That evil witch
Laughed
And broke off my favorite limb
With thr bestest of my apples

I can still hear her
Sharp screechy laugh

I'm going to use your limb
For a new broom stick
She scowled

The crack of the wood
Snapped
Louder

My limb broke off
And the thud from the apples
Pounded the ground

It was my favorite limb
I used it to throw apples
Hard and straight

My other limbs can't throw

That's why I missed Dorothy

DING DONG DANG
The tree cried out

That bitchy witch must be stopped

I want revenge

I miss my limb
I can't throw
A straight fast ball anymore

A broom stick of all things
How could she

I have roots
The tree continues

I can't walk
I'm rooted in

Bring a basket of apples
To the Emerald City
They should be the
Bestest of the bestest

Find the Wizard
And tell him about my limb

His magic is magical
He will fix it
He'll  grow me
Another limb

It will be the bestest of the best
A fastball curve
Straight out of a cannon
My apples will fly

You're off to see the wizard
Be prepared
He cautioned

That evil witch
Is hungry

Follow the yellow brick road
It gets smoother and more beautiful
As you get closer
To the Emerald City

Where any magic can really happen

It is the city
Of miracles
Where hope is the master
Of the dream

Toto ran around in a circle
Panted
And barked
Good bye

The apple tree disappeared

The evening shadows darkened
Into the night
And we walked along singing
Until we slept

Tomorrow is another day

                                                                            Part Three

                                                                   Days Of Oportunity

The sun  lifted
Into the blueness
Of another day
And the clouds floated gently
Over a horizon of the new

Shapes of white
Stretched randomly
Welcomed the dawn

It was a day of opportunity

Dorthy was starved
She was attacking
A red apples

Each bite echoing
Her chew
With a loud and crisp
Crunch

She did not see
The silhouette
Of the pure black evil
Swirling counter clockwise
Above her head

Crunch
She took another bite

Yum
She said
This is as sweet as honey
It really is the bestest

Quiet down I yelled
I need to sleep
I'm old
And my migraine
Aches

And I'm dreaming about cheeseburgers

Toto was awake
And would'nt cooperate

The dog
Licked my face

Yuch

Dorothy laughed
And threw me an apple

She pictured Kansas
It was where her heart lived

There's no place
Like home
Dotthy sadly
And softly cried

Auntie Em is there
We live on a farm
With corn
And a bunch of dairy cows

It's on the outskirts
In the fields
Of Lawrence, Kansas

Auntie Em and I
Had tea together

Every afternoon

We talked girl talk
About dresses
And movies
And boys

I love her
To the moon and back

I miss everyone
Doothy was sobbing
Real tears

We watch television a lot
AGT is my favorite show

We're Rock Chalk Jayhawks
Basketball fans

We watch
Every game
Like a religion
And this is our year

ROCK CHALK
Go Jayhawks
I yell
That's my team too
I never miss a game

Perfect
Dorothy continued

We were watching
The NCAA basketball tournament
KU rebounded from
Fifteen down

I was amazingly nervous
And held my breadth

Kansas was up by three
The tension was tight
It was the championship game

There were nine seconds left
When the sky
Erupted
Into a dark
Twirling tornado
That swirled into a roar

It was louder than the game

Toto and I
Were hiding under the bed
When a gale of wind
Launched us upwards
Like a rocket
Into space

We were thrown into the wind
Blowing round and round
To who knows where
When or why

We're here now

With a witch
Who wants to eat us

It's crazy
This place is
A living video game

Yeah
I said
We can call it

Oz, Behind The Curtaim

I laughed aloud
And talked more

I was driving
Destination
MNHI in Michigan
They have a miracle migraine medical cure

The doctors there are magical

It was a pouring blizzard
Wind swirling
The rain burst down
On the road
Splashing
Against the windshield wipers

The wind gusted
My vision
Blurred
And I had to concentrate

THE RADIO ROARED
Jayhawk's

They had come back
From down fifteen
At half

We we're determined
To win

We were up by three
i was mesmerized
It was destiny in the making

Rock Chalk
I chanted

Nine seconds left
Clock ticking
We needed a stop

I drove the car
Onto the shoulder
Of the road
I had to listen

I held my breadth
And waited

I was so nervous

Then it got weird
I'm flying through the air
Spinning like a top

No radio
No Rock Chalk Jayhawk

I'm here now
And I have a migraine

AnI have no idea where here is

Let's go see the wizard
Dorothy sang our

His magic is magical
His wand will bring miracles
He'll fly me to Kansas

Auntie Em
Must be worried
I miss everyone
So much

The wizard will
Grant your wish
She said

Your headaches will vanish
Like the wind in a storm

And Toto will get a bath
And a hair cut
She said aloud

Maybe even a doggy pedicure

Bark bark
Toto romped
And growled

He hated baths

He ran
from Dorthy
To me

I held him
Reluctantly
As we continued
Our journey

We were somewhere over the rainbow

                                                                         Part Four

                                                                  The Country Life

FOLLOW THE YELLOW BRICK ROAD
We sang

FOLLOW THE YELLOW BRICK ROAD
We sang loud
And in harmony

The yellow brick road became smooth

And alive with color

Blue birds flew
Butterflies flapped
And Robbins nested
Giving birth
To their young
In the continuum
Of life and destiny

We were unaware
That the evil witch was
Watching from high
Atop the broom stick
Built from the limb
Of the Apple tree

She was searching
For the girl
With the red glossy shoes

                                                                        Part Five

                                                                         Travels

Time moved
It was noon

The yellow brick road
Brightened
As the sun
Brought clarity
To the magnificence of Oz

Life was plentiful
The green was green
And the yellows
Became reds
Flowers abounded

Bees  brought pollen
Life was life

It was perfection

Corn was king

Rows of husks
Lined the road

White fences
Fresh with paint
Brought order
To a life
That exists
Only in a fairy tale

I'll sing my favorite song
It's Auntie Em's favorite too
Dorothy tuned in

I listened
As we strolled through the day.

Somewhere OverThe Rainbow

Dorothy began singing
Skies Are Blue
I joined in

Toto ran up to Doroth
Anf listened
Before barking
In tune

It was masterful
The skies roared applause

Flashing lights
Struck the sky

It began as a drizzle
Geting worse

Dorothy kept singing
Me too

Toto three

We walked on wet
We saw farms
In the distance
Cows in the fields

Grazing as if life was forever
Tendered to perfection
And ready for market

Oh look
Dorothy yelled

I see a big red barn
And a large white farmhouse
The look is shiny
And new
I bet there's people there
Who can help us
And give us food

Toto got excited
Barked
And ran ahead

How different is the reality from afar
When vision blurs
The imperfections
Of sight

We walked
Till we could walk no more
When we reached the gate
Of the house from afar

The house was in disrepair
The whiteness of paint
Had eroded to a dirt
Rubbed grey

Vacant
To the needs of time

The house looked lost
It's character was gone
It's  people had left

No one cared
It was an unhappy house

                                                                        Part Six

                                                                  Life On The Farm

But this is Oz
Dorothy madly lamented
Her voice
Growing in volume

Why is this house so barren

It should be loved

With the greenest of grass
And flowers that bloom
In the emptiness

Of the darkness
Of night

With new fresh paint
The brightest of bright

And wheat flourishing
In the corn fields

With a dog
Just like Toto

Like my life in Kansas
With people who cherish
The feelings
Of love life and home

I miss Auntie Em
And Uncle Henry too
I love them so much
She cried

Toto barked
He ran to the old red barn
It was missing planks
But kept its charm
With hanging old
Standard Oil metal signs
Seemingly holding the barn
Together
Decorating it
With memories
From another time

The wind whistled
Cycling through the barn
As if it was frightened
Screaming for help

This farm sure needed love

Where are the people
I asked
Walking through the house

It was painted a calming blue
Hanging pictures
Of smiling people
Graced the walls
As we walked the halls
Searching for anything
That told the story
Of such desolate emptiness

Dorothy joined Toto
In the barn
He was playing
In the corn husks
Cobwebs and spiders
Joining in on the fun

The barn was faded
The wood aged
It needed a carpenter
A coat of paint
And lots of caring love

My headaches ached
Nonstop

But I couldn't rest

It's a mystery
I said
This farm should be paradise

This is a land
Of enchantment and dreams
Where the magic
Of the mighty wizard of Oz
Should protect it
Keep it safe
And youthful looking

I wonder why no one cares

                                                                   Part Seven

                                                                  Conversation

When we tell Oz
About the apple tree's limb
Em can tell him about the farm

It will be splendid again
Like the Emerald City
New forever

The farm will have people
They're will be laughter
Again

I yelled
As the pain
In my head throbbed

We went out to the courtyard
The farm had character
And hope
Oz's magic will be magical

WHY ARE YOU HERE
The house seemed to ask

Its voice a deep depth baritone
Softly questioning us
About who we are

THEY seem to care
A softer feminine voice
Broke in

The house and barn were talking
It was a family conversation

Partners for life
Their minds were one

We have to trust someone
The barn whispered
Her voice softening more
Then trailing off

Into the wind

Onto the corn fields

Full grown
A golden brown
Chocolate color
Waiting to be picked

The house was thinking

It's shutters rattled
With the sounds
Of his thoughts

There's no one else
In this fairytale kingdom
He said

You're right
She retorted

The barn door opened
Then closed

Its gates whistling
The sounds of talk

The barn yelled out
We normally don't talk to strangers
But you're so nice
In a strange sort of way

The house chirped in

And your dog
Is beautiful too
Short legs and all

OMG
Dorothy gasped
Now a girl barn
Is talking to a boy house

Holy moly
How is this possible

We'be been married
A long time
The couple joined in

It's going to be our
75th anniversary

We've never argued
There's always joy

We were so happy
The farm was
Like a fairytale

We had ducks and geese
And flowers
And the lawn
Was always
Freshly cut

There were pink plastic flamingos
All over the yard
And an old wooden swing set
Where we would
Shoot the Moon
And back
Flying high
Over the rainbow

Now it swings empty
The breezes swirl
A last goodbye

                                                                           Part Eight

                                                                           The Boys

The barn liked to talk
And the brothers liked to party
There was always laughing
And dancing

And people singing karaoke
To the music
Of a beer partying band

Who drank too much beer

There are three brothers
The barn offered
With a lust for life

They're like our children
They were born
On s stack of straw
Right there
She said proudly

I could tell lots of stories
She continued

We were both so proud
Of the boys
They grew up happy
Smiling in the sun
Taking care
Of this and that
Playing hide and go seek
Then high school football

They're grown tall now

The youngest is the smartest
He could make
A clock fly

Time would disappear

And as much as we searched
We could not find
where it went

My middle son
Is handsome
He's a mechanic's mechanic
Always doing chores
Around the barn

We never had
Squeaks in our doors
Or leaks in the roof

And we always looked youngishly
Painted
And well maintained

He was wonderful

Our oldest boy is tough and rough
He worked the fields
Sometimes all day
And nights galore
Till the crops
Were perfect

He was fearless
And a hero
On the battlefield

Saved nine lives

He received a medal
Of valor

It was a gold star with fancy ribbons

We were so proud
And happy
When he returned
To the land of Oz

We were a happy household
Always busy

Toto lifted his head
Barked and panted

He was chasing a squirrel
From tree to tree
We were impressed
With his quickness

The door of the house opened
Made a noise and closed
The house was talking to me
It's windows we're open
And its shutters
Unshut

Welcome
The house offered
Welcome said the barn

It was as if their voice was smiling

There was an aura
Of freshness
Floating invisibly
Around the house

It was the morning
Of the next day

                                                                             Part Nine

We have chickens
And we have eggs
The barn boasted

I'll boil some eggs
And pick some sweet corn
They're golden ready
Dorothy eagerly joined in

There's flower in the pantry
Crisco in the can
And cans of carnation milk
To roll the dough
To perfection

Itg smells
Like heaven
Goldon Brown
And yummy to eat
The house responded

I can make corn fritters
Dorothy declared proudly

in Kansas
Auntie Em
Makes fritters
With yolks up eggs
And butter fried apples

Melting with love

They're Uncle Henry''s favorite
I swear he eats
A dozen at a time

I'm going to the barn
To fetch some eggs
Dorothy said

                                                                              Part Ten

                                                                       The Broom Stick

The sky darkened

Swirling heaps
Of black laden clouds
Roaring screams of terror
Like muted thunder
Alive with form
And evil
In purpose
Appears as a mist

Growing in form

Snarling words
Growing loudrer
With hateful anger
Screaming hatred
In a sharp and creepy
Screech

It was the Wicked Witch Of The West
Her broomstick newly crafted
From the limb
Of the Apple tree

And her monkeys
Hundreds of flying simians
Circling above
Armed with swords
Of gold
And dressed to kill
In a silken purple and gold
Tuxedo like uniforms

Chirping evil
They encircle
Their pray

What goodies have we got here
The green slimed witch demanded

Wer're off to see the wizard
Dotrothy and I both responderd

There was fear in our eyes

                                                                  Part Eleven

                                                         The End Of The Beginning

Time is continuace
It shadows our dreams
And shapes our tomorrows

The golden rainbow
Live it well

                                                                      To Be Continued

I am Oz
The all powerful

I am the destiny
For lost souls

My magic is magical

Ding Dong
The Wicked Witch
Is Dead

The crowd roars
With the voices
Of approval

It is Dorothy
And Toto

I am the Wizard for lost souls

My touch
Cures

The crowd sings approval
As they chant his name

I live behind
The curtains of truth
In the city of dreams

It was the kingdom
Of Emeralds
Shining green
With the magnificence
Of hope
Welcomes all
Who come seeking
The beauty of healing
With the purity
And caring
Of a noble heart

I am the all powerful
Wizard of Oz

He claps his hand

The trumpets blared
And the people cheered

The trumpets blare
It is a majestic tribute
