Tangled in Silence

tangled in silence

and embraced by memories —

I can’t catch my breath

as moonbeams press on my chest

my lips remember your kiss

WAKA is a short poem, older than haiku, written to express feelings. It's
written in 31 syllables arranged in five lines-- 5/7/5/7/7 (as tanka but waka came first)

In English, the syllable count can be less than 31 because Japanese words cannot be translated by a single equivalent word in English. The MODERN WAKA topic doesn't have to be about nature.

In the Imperial family in the Heian period, waka was the most important form of communication between lovers, and a person's skill in poetry was a major criterion in determining his or her standing in society, even influencing political positions.
