A sunbeam that has lost its way

A sunbeam that has lost its way
     upon my shadowed casement falls,
     and glitters there, an errant ray,
     that penetrates these prison walls.

As I lie mourning hope's demise,
     a sunbeam that has lost its way
     dispels the gloom and clears my eyes
     to show how truth and honour stray.

How swiftly do our dreams decay
     where darkness dwells and sorrows reign.
     A sunbeam that has lost its way
     can promise light and life again.

A trifle sets the prisoner free,
     the smallest chink in skies of gray;
     you spoke my name and smiled on me -
     a sunbeam that has lost its way.
