Sonnet

That summer

by kiwisteveh

That summer fate aligned our stars above;
You were the princess, I the dashing prince.
We met, we laughed, we kissed, we fell in love -
These dreams I shall recall a lifetime since.

We roamed the sunburnt hillsides hand in hand;
To paradise we held the golden keys.
Our passions overflowed upon the land;
We quaffed life's potent vintage to the lees.

From heady days when I could call you mine
The fruits of love lay scattered in the dust.
The deeds of summer withered on the vine,
For autumn came as autumn always must.

Those days we let the carefree harvest spill
Are frozen now in bitter winter's chill.
