Anapaestic - maybe!

Flotsam

by kiwisteveh

When the tide of humanity swept to my door
a fragment of flotsam from far-away war,
how could I imagine the joy I'd discover,
     a friend, a companion, a partner, a lover?

So tender, so fragile, so easily broken,
but inside a bright flame of courage had woken.
How it burned, though your country was battered and tossed,
though friends were still missing, your family lost.

But the demons lay deep in the land of your dreams -
the cry in the darkness, the terror, the screams.
Then memory, merciless, gnawed at the brain
and revived all the heartbreak, the loss and the pain.

Today in this graveyard I lay you to rest
in a gown of white satin, a rose on your breast,
a victim of evil that shattered your heart
and I mourn a life wasted, a love torn apart.

Recognized

This was disqualified from the Poetry mechanics contest with my blessing because the four lines with feminine rhyme endings (lines 3-6) meant those lines weren't strictly anapaestic.

Enjoy the poem for what it is - I'll be back for the next contest!
