Words

"Sticks and stones can break my bones
but words can never hurt me."*
This I know to be untrue
Your words have cut me

Like a surgeon with great skill
Each word slicing deep
Until my soul felt the chill
Until you made me weep

You shrug your shoulders and smirk
You don't seem to care
You don't realize you were the jerk
Tonight you'll be in my prayer.

Sticks and stones can ONLY break my bones
but words CAN hurt me.
This I know to be true
Your words have hurt me.

* This children's taunt was first listed in "Folk Phrases of Four Counties" (1894) by G.F. Northall. The picture was taken of the Matanuska Glacier in Alaska. I thought it appropriate to take it in black and white to show it's starkness and coldness. I wrote this for the person's out there who have ever felt bullied. Words hurt.
