reflective naani
Hunger
by adewpearl
Hollow cheeks and sunken eyes stare with stupor filled with need that sympathy alone can never feed. |

The naani is a four line poem comprised of 20-25 syllables - this one has 24. The topic usually has to do with human conditions and current circumstances.
Hollowed cheeks, sunken eyes and mental stupor are only the beginning of a tragic list of symptoms of the effect of starvation on the body, mind and soul.
According to the United Nation's Food and Agricultural Organization (October, 2009), 1.02 billion people in the world are malnourished. The World Health Organization estimates that 1/3 of the world's people are well fed, 1/3 underfed, and 1/3 starving. Sympathy/empathy is a good place to start, but sympathy alone does not feed a billion people.
