quatrains about Pearl Harbor
December 7th
by adewpearl
Had Christmas gifts been bought
for those aboard the ships? Was mistletoe yet hung to tempt their loving lips? Had they yet built the bikes to give their precious sons that clear December morn in 1941? What were their final thoughts as bombs rained from the sky, that second Advent Sunday when Christmas passed them by? |

On the second Sunday in Advent, on a clear morning in 1941, the U.S. naval base and its ships were attacked at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii by the Japanese. Pearl Harbor Day, the day that went down in infamy, took place in the middle of Advent, the season in the Christian calendar when families prepare for the big day and open their hearts to the coming of the Prince of Peace. Ironically, on these four Sundays, candles are lit on the Advent wreath representing hope, peace, love and joy, and it is on the day of the lighting of the Peace Candle that this act of war was waged. It is a day most worthy of commemorating.
