The value of the local produce stand!

A chapter in the book Dining Without, Tony

George's Farm Market

by Mike K2

I remember when the foundation was laid,
as it was a great place where I played.
Until Grandma stopped by and lectured,
it wasn't a place for a child, she conjectured.

But the place going up was built on fertile soil,
selling the produce from the land where they toiled.
Filled with produce, a great place to stop by;
that day's fresh produce making for a great buy.

Asparagus, peas, beats, cabbage, peppers and eggplant;
their Silver Queen and tomatoes are the best, people rant.
Lima beans, cauliflower, string beans, red peppers or hot;
people always check in to see what they have, "That can be got."

Zucchini, spring onions, broccoli, cherry tomatoes and cucumbers;
cantaloupes, honey dews and watermelons, provide a complete summer.
The waining season offers, white and yellow squash, peaches for pie;
as the sad thought they will soon be closed with nothing to buy.

Closing out with pumpkins and gourdes,
to decorate for the Halloween hoards.
They also sell snacks, sodas and dairy,
Closed for winter, I crave their strawberries!

In an ever developing land it is great they keep their farm;
sell fresh that day in a place that is friendly and warm.

A great stop just down the street...
As winter relents to the coming of spring showers,
it is great to see the doors open, decorated with flowers.
The freshest, tastiest produce, sold with prices that are fair.
Shoot! I forget that you can also buy from them, pears!

Couldn't resist leaving the pears for the end! LOL

George and Richard Burtin are the owners of Burtin Farms and started the produce stand with their father in 1973. I remember playing in the foundation, until my Grandmother got that inkling and retrieved me and it was the first building that I saw going up. George is a 5th generation farmer and these days, with our area losing a lot of agricultural land to development more and more, he increases in my admiration.

In fact, that was the only place where he would buy from with the exception of potatoes, carrots and celery. In fact my dad thought they sold the freshest and best tasting produce. Every one of our summer barbecues had to have his silver queen corn and cantaloupes. There is only one exception, dad thought the cantaloupes were just a bit better bought fresh from the Eastern Shore, but felt it wasn't worth spending two hours to drive to. In fact, my sister worked at the stand for quite a while and in addition to a wonderful relationship with the Burtin family, she enjoyed the customers that stopped by. I remember how happy she was that George will let her go the farm and help with the cutting of the cabbages and how painfully raw her hands were afterward, that she referred to as labor. On Harford Road, many businesses then to be overlooked in Parkville, but staking out George's will reveal that there is always someone stopping by to see what they have. Short of not having money, you will find something to walk out with.
