Each summer is different.

Weathering Summer

by Mike K2

Whether Adirondack chairs, hammocks,grass or sand;
every summer brings something different to land.

Wrapped up against the heat and sun of the day;
so very young, I managed to get blistered anyway.
With sunscreen clown-like makeup I was covered;
a new found aspect of summer was always discovered.

My grandmother and friend in an Adirondack chair,
the ant-like world came alive in the space around there.
Though only eight, lying with an older woman as we laughed and swung;
she married the next year, but how special that was, I always sung.

Soon with my best friend, off to the park we raced to explore;
with lunch in hand and a, "Be careful!" That Mom always implored.
Then like Huck Finn, for a week, I canoed down a river as I camped;
sleeping in a tarp covered hammock, my spirit never got  damped.

Then it was working in humid heat as I profusely sweat,
with just enough energy left to show off, you can bet!
Then work became dealing with bills, problems and family;
there was a seat to find in summer, a pleasant break for me.

Now aged, I find myself sitting in an Adirondack chair;
with drink in hand, I enjoy everyone's adventures from there.

Photograph or author taken in May of 1968 at Cape Hattaris. Photographed photoshopped for spotting, color fading correction and to remove Mom's hand from bucket. Sorry Mom.

I am not sure if this poem is my best, but I love the thought of summer becoming a full circle event. To be honest, in Baltimore, it is hot and humid and takes a lot out of you. It doesn't help if your genetics are of German mountain desent as your body will never get the common sense to stop sweating. When I was asked to write a summer poem, I wanted it to be all inclusive of my life. I found it best to represent the developmental epocs within my life and that sense that times are a changin'. I still work hard and run around, but increasingly, enjoy watching other people and children enjoying running around in their Summers.
