Fallen Star

by adewpearl

white water lily,
fallen star in flowered form,
floats as fish swim by -
serenity embodied,
symmetry upon a pond

A Brazilian Indian legend says that the water lily was once an earth maiden in love with a warrior on the moon. She refused to marry all earthly suitors found by her parents and went out every night the moon shone to try to see her lunar lover. One night she spied the moon's reflection in a lake and dove in to get closer to her warrior, but she drowned. The moon could not revive her so turned her into a star upon the earth in the form of a water lily.
The water lily is one of two birth flowers for the month of July.
